Chad Johnson (Ochocinco)

Chad Johnson - 2008 Topps Mayo
Who: Wide Receiver Chad Johnson

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 2008 Topps Mayo

Acquired: Card Show Purchase

Comments: I'm usually not in the market for autographed cards when at a card show unless it's a set I need. Most are overpriced and the cards are generally pretty ugly. That said, I did pick this Chad Johnson (now Chad Ochocinco) for what I thought was a reasonable price - $10. I really like the 2008 Topps Mayo design and have a soft spot for framed mini-cards. I didn't have a Johnson or Ochocinco in my collection, so this one seemed like the right pick-up at the right time.

Joe Theismann & Ken Anderson

Joe Theismann & Ken Anderson - Passing Leaders
Who: Quarterbacks Joe Theismann & Ken Anderson

Team: Washington Redskins & Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 1983 Topps '82 Passing Leaders

Acquired: TTM (Theisman - 13 Days) (Anderson - 11 Days)

Comments: My first attempt at a dual autographed card through the mail went to a pair of the most consistent signers in football - Joe Theismann and Kenny Anderson.

I've received returns from both in the past - a pair of cards from Joe last year and a '79 Topps from Kenny Anderson - one of the first requests I ever sent out. It was cool to get both of these great quarterbacks on a single card - in less than a month, no less!

When I sent to Ken, I also included this '81 Topps which he signed beautifully. Since the Bengals were in white that day, the signature really turned out well.

This '83 Topps is the second dual card I've completed. The other card was completed on two separate in-person signings by former Reds Lee May and George Foster.

Ken Anderson

Ken Anderson
Who: Quarterback Ken Anderson

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 1981 Topps

Acquired: TTM 2/2 7/29/09 (11 Days)

Comments: Great quarterback, great signer. Kenny hooked me up again via the mail. I sent this card to him last year, and he kindly signed for me. This time around, I sent two cards - the one pictured above, and a 1984 Topps passing leaders card that he shares with Joe Theismann - another great signer. That card is currently on its way to Joe. I imagine a dual-signed card will find its way back to me soon. Of course, it will be posted here.

This card came out fantastic. The problem with a lot of Bengals cards - and a lot of football cards in general - is that players will often have black or dark uniforms on in the photo, make a signature hard to see clearly if signed over the jersey. Ken's '81 Topps card features him and the Bengals in their whites - making for a great card to sign.

Jerome Simpson 2008 Bowman
Who: Wide Receiver Jerome Simpson

Card: 2008 Bowman

Acquired: TTM 2/2 6/19/2009 (10 days)

Comments: I believe this is TTM I've sent to an active player on the Bengals. Most guys on the team don't seem like great signers though the mail, or just don't have cards to get signed. Plus, I'm a little more into baseball and don't put in the same effort with current Bengals. BUT, Jerome was worth the shot, and he came through, signing two cards for me in just 10 days. The first one up is a 2008 Bowman - not a bad looking card.

Hopefully Jerome will have greater contributions to the team in 2009 with the departure of TJ Houshmandzadeh after the '08 season. Last seaon he appeared in 6 games, with only one catch for 2 yards.

Bob Johnson

Bob Johnson 1978 Topps
Who: Center Bob Johnson

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 1978 Topps

Acquired: TTM 3/3 5/1/2009 (3 days)

Comments: In addition to a 1973 Topps, Mr. Johnson also signed a pair of 1978 Topps for me, the other one made out to my nephew. Very nice of him to do.

I really like this card. There's something serene about it. Bob, just standing there on the sidelines, gazing upon the field. His jacket slung over the forearm. The airbrushing on the helmet softens the overall look. The card heavily reads left to right, with Bob's stare only adding to the severity of the flow. You wonder if he's looking at the final seconds of a Bengals loss. It's too bad the card has a pink border... an orange one would have been prefect.

Bob Johnson 1973 Topps
Who: Center Bob Johnson

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 1973 Topps

Acquired: TTM 3/3 5/1/2009 (3 days)

Comments: Did you read that? THREE days. Mr. Bob Johnson, the "Original Bengal" signed and had my cards back to me in THREE days. Unreal. It helps that he lives pretty close by, but jeez, that is some turnaround. Did he sign them while the postman was waiting for him in the driveway? Wow.

Anyways, Bob is known as the "Original Bengal" as he was the first player selected in the draft by the Bengals when they expanded the AFL in 1968. He turned out to be a fantastic first pick, as Bob became the leader of the fledgling Bengals, playing from '68 to '79. He and Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz are the only Bengals to have their numbers retired.

Bob Trumpy 1970 Topps

Card: 1970 Topps

Acquired: TTM 2/2 4/15/2009 (6 days)

Comments: Here's a great vintage rookie card of Bengal great, Bob Trumpy. Mr. Trumpy signed two cards for me via the mail in record time. Since we live pretty close to one another, the cards didn't have too far to travel.

As a player and as a broadcaster, Bob Trumpy is a part of the fabric of Cincinnati and Bengals history. Since he's retired now, I think a lot of folks are forgetting about him a bit. It's a shame too, he's a great Cincinnatian. If it weren't for the football to the right of the ribbon, one might not know this is a football card. Ah, vintage cards... so great.

How about this card? Drab design, almost non-sports like.

Charlie Joiner

Who: Hall of Famer Wide Receiver Charlie Joiner

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 1976 Topps

Acquired: TTM 2/2 4/4/2009 (11 days)

Comments: Growing up, I only knew Charlie Joiner as a San Diego Charger and eventual hall of famer. What I didn't know was that he played 3+ seasons with the Bengals early in his career. Though he didn't tear the league up while rockin' The Jungle, he did end up putting together a Hall of Fame career with the Chargers, catching passes from another Hall of Famer - Dan Fouts. It's great to know the Bengals had a little action in a great football player's career... it's too bad no one knows about it here in Cincinnati.

So, about about that photo? Topps was really firing on all cylinders back in the '70s, huh? We all know that they couldn't use team logos back then because of licensing, but, come on! I can hear is now... "Hi Charlie, I'm Chuck from Topps. We need your photo from next year's release... can you stand... um... yeah... right there against the wall... yeah... mmm humm... fantastic. Thanks."

Comments: I got this card, along with a whole box of Bengals cards from I am Joe Collector. He sent me a bunch of Bengals cards - and some other teams - for nothing. Just out the kindness of his heart. He also hooked up a bunch of other collectors as well. Very cool stuff.

I mailed this card to Craig at work, which I felt a little funny about, and he had it back to me in just three days. Lexington is just down the road from Cincinnati, but still... it's so cool that he took care of me so fast. Thanks, Craig!

Tommy Casanova

Tommy Casanova 1975 Topps
Who: Safety Tommy Casanova

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Card: 1975 Topps

Acquired: TTM 1/1 1/12/2009 (16 days)

Comments: Tommy Casanova was an OUTSTANDING free safety for the Bengals in the '70s. He retired while in his prime after the '77 season to peruse his medical degree... after playing in the Pro Bowl four years in a row. Tommy is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame after having an awesome career at LSU.

Now, why on earth had I never heard of Tommy Casanova? I've been a Bengals fan all my life and he just never came up. That's the problem with the Bengals - what little great past they have never gets celebrated. Now, Tommy does have a huge banner hanging in the concourse of Paul Brown Stadium - right there with Anthony Munoz, Boomer Esiason, Coy Bacon, Max Montoya and a few others. I'm sure most people that walk through that stadium and see that banner have no clue what he did as a Bengal. Kinda sad.

So, for all that... I've got a great autograph from a great Bengal. Sweet!

Oh... and isn't his name EPIC? What dude wouldn't want that name? Tommy. Casanova.

Comments: Stanford Jennings was probably my favorite person on the planet when he ran back that kick-off for a touchdown in Super Bowl XXIII for the Bengals. I pretty much went berzerk and lost my voice and kick my brother. It was insane. Check it out here. How about this Pacific card? I had never even heard of them before. Funny stuff.

Comments: Eric has been working for the Bengals for a few years as the Director of Player Relations. Not sure what that means... but I'm sure he's good at it. Eric didn't have a great NFL career - he's probably best known as the scoring 4 touchdowns for the UCLA Bruins in the 1986 Rose Bowl game against Iowa. He was the game's MVP.

I wrote him a quick note about how my parents took me and my brother to the 1988 AFC Championship game against the Bills and how, to this day, it was the greatest game I had ever been to. Sam wrote back a note about how great that game was - a very nice surprise. Thanks Coach Wyche!

Comments: Huge Jim Breech fan right here! Man, this brings back such good memories of the Bengals. It's hard to say that, I know. But man, he was a big part of some great teams, and one of I think 5 or 6 Bengals that appeared in both of their Super Bowl appearances - '82 and '89. Jim is still pretty huge in the Cincinnati community, teaming up with former Bengals kicker Doug Pelfrey and current Bengals kicker Shayne Graham for the Kicks for Kids Program.

He did play seven solid seasons for the Bengals and made it to the Super Bowl in '89, so that's pretty cool, right? Yes. Yes it is.

Comments: LeClair! Awesome. The signature on this card got a little smudged, but the one going to my nephew that he personalized is perfect. I'm happy. Mr. LeClair turned these around really quick - much appreciated. Jim had a pretty good career with the Bengals and played on some decent Bengals teams in the '70s. Pro Football Reference has only limited stats for him, but what is there paints a picture of a pretty good linebacker.

Comments: Tim Krumrie is, without a doubt, a complete and total badass. In my house growing up, he was our #1 Bengal. Tough, awesome, great football player, etc. I'll never forget him breaking his leg in Super Bowl XXIII. That was unreal. Even more unreal, he was back at training camp and ready to go the following season. He's amazing. Gotta love that. I'm totally jacked to get a pair of autographs from him.

Comments: Coy Bacon! Oh yeah! Honestly, I didn't know who Coy Bacon was, or how good he really was when I got this card from my cousin when I was young. But, I knew he had a badass name. I named my 2008 Fantasy Football teams after him because of it. Recently, I looked into whether he signed TTM or not, and easily found an address for him. I sent two cards off and received them just six days later - both signed. Sweet! How about that "C" in his signature? Funky.

Card: 1979 Topps

Acquired: TTM 1/1 9/??/08

Comments: Ken returned this TTM very quickly - within two weeks, if I remember correct. This is one of those autographs I always wanted to get. I vaguely remember Ken Anderson playing at the very end of his career when Boomer Esiason was taking over the regins of the Bengals. My family was always a big fan of Ken's and I had a hand-me-down #14 Bengals jersey that I wore during Thanksgiving flag football games. So yeah, this is a pretty special card in my collection.

One other thing - It always bugged me how the Bengals uniforms during the '60s and 70's were JUST LIKE the Browns. Could we have been more unoriginal? That was probably one of the few mistakes the late, great Paul Brown made.

I brought two cards with me that day to have signed, and I almost chickened out. I actually did chat with him for a few minutes, but I didn't ask for an autograph. But, I was leaving for lunch or something and I happened to ride down with him in the elevator and asked him if he would sign my cards then. Of course, he happily obliged. Anthony is a fantastic guy and a great ambassador for the Bengals, football and Cincinnati. We are lucky to have him.
