Kevin Hickey

Kevin Hickey - 1990 Donruss
Who: Pitcher Kevin Hickey

Team: Baltimore Orioles

Card: 1990 Donruss

Acquired: In Person, Soxfest 2010

Comments: Actually, this is the last card I am posting from Soxfest. Nothing like ending a crescendo on a '90 Donruss note.

Ed Farmer

Ed Farmer - 1981 Donruss
Who: Pitcher Ed Farmer

Team: Chicago White Sox

Card: 1981 Donruss

Acquired: In Person, Soxfest 2010

Comments: This post goes out to Zach over at Autographed Cards - he loves these dang '81 Donruss cards. I gotta say, I like this one too. The card comes with a decent story too.

At Soxfest, one of the last autograph sessions I got to was for Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson. I was set with cards for Darrin, but didn't have anything for Ed to sign. Even after seeing the one card dealer at the Soxfest dealer area, I still had nothing. I figured I would get in line and ask around to see if someone would be willing to trade. Luckily, there were three guys in front of me who had tons of cards and one offered a few up to me. Of the three he had, I choose this the '81 D-Russ and the rest is history. Just goes to show there are plenty of nice folks out there.

Check out the uni Ed's sportin' on this card. Those collars were insane. Too bad he's not rockin' the shorts.

Kurt Stillwell

Kurt Stillwell - 1988 Donruss
Who: Shortstop Kurt Stillwell

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1988 Donruss

Acquired: TTM 2/2 9/28/2009 (233 days)

Comments: The nice, tight shot of Kurt on this '88 Donruss really saves the card. Yeah, those borders are hideous, but the Reds' clean white home uniforms really jump off the card. Kurt's about to smack a double to the opposite field, so this set-up is all right for me. Do you love that Kurt underlines his last name in his autograph? I do. That's confidence right there, folks. Eat it up.

Chris Speier

Chris Speier - 1989 Donruss
Who: Infielder Chris Speier

Team: San Francisco Giants

Card: 1989 Donruss

Acquired: TTM 2/2 8/1/2009 (5 days)

Comments: Chris is an awesome signer. Always great about TTM and fantastic in person. He's just a great baseball guy. He turned my request around in just 5 days. It helps that I live in Cincinnati, but still. That is getting to your mail pretty quickly. This '89 Donruss was just a rider included in a request of two cards. The other card, which was the real reason I sent the request, will have to come later. I have some more work to do on that one.

The first card that Chris ever signed for me is one of my favorites, actually. He signed his 1973 Topps card at Redsfest last year.

Bruce Berenyi

Bruce Berenyi 1983 Donruss
Who: Pitcher Bruce Berenyi

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1983 Donruss

Acquired: TTM 2/2 3/18/2009 (124 days)

Comments: Bruce may have taken his time getting a pair of cards back to me, but his signature is a beauty. Only Aaron Harang can top that.

Bruce pitched during some dark years for the Reds in the early '80s, but he did make an impression early on and finished 4th in the Rookie of the Year balloting in 1981. Not bad at all.

You gotta love these Donruss cards... they are easy to identify, huh? I wonder who's idea it was to put the year of the cards edition in the design. I guess Topps' Allen and Ginter does that now, but it seems a tad odd. I guess that fad was short-lived in the early '80s.

Also... don't these Donruss card come off as cheap to you too? They're like cards your mom would order of you in your Little League uniform. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but the bat and ball are a little too cliche and formulaic.

Billy Hatcher

Billy Hatcher 1991 Donruss
Who: Infielder Billy Hatcher

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1991 Donruss

Acquired: TTM 2/2 2/20/2009 (9 days)

Comments: This is the second of two cards that Billy signed for me. This beauty is going to my little nephew, Brayden.

BTW, this design ain't too much better than that 1991 Fleer. Sorry, Billy. Nice shot of the old Plant City, Florida complex the Reds used to train at.

Guy Hoffman

Guy Hoffman 1988 Donruss
Who: Guy Hoffman

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1988 Donruss

Acquired: TTM 2/2 2/3/2009 (14 days)

Comments: Guy really took care of me on these two cards. He signs them like he's on a mission... and mission to make you feel special. It worked on me.

Tom Foley

Tom Foley 1988 Donruss
Who: Infielder Tom Foley

Team: Montreal Expos

Card: 1988 Donruss

Acquired: TTM 3/3 12/6/2008 (17 days)

Comments: Is Tom Foley wearing a Tom Foley wrist band? Were can I get a pair? Might need those for softball this spring.

Mike Cameron

Mike Cameron 1999 Leaf Lineage or 2002 Donruss
Who: Outfielder Mike Cameron

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1999 Leaf Lineage or 2002 Donruss thing

Acquired: TTM 3/3 1/16/2009 (7 days)

Comments: Mike only played one season for the Reds... the nearly-magical 1999 season. Afterwards, he was shipped off to Seattle in the Junior trade. Since then, he's been a pretty darn good player for the Mariners, Mets, Padres and Brewers.

What I cannot figure out is this card. It's says 1999 Leaf Lineage on the front. The copyright on the back is 2002 Donruss. I guess Donruss released this "Lineage" card in 2002? Seems pointless. Oh well, it's my only Mike Cameron card with his as a Red. I'll take it.

Mike's an awesome signer. I got this card and two others back in just seven days. Seven days!

Barry Larkin

Barry Larkin 2004 Leaf Certified Materials Autograph
Who: Shortstop Barry Larkin

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 2004 Leaf Certified Materials Autograph

Acquired: Gift from Cincy Reds Cards

Comments: The man himself, Barry Larkin. The card was a huge surprise from Joe over at Cincy Reds Cards. A great card too! The scan is not doing the card much of a favor here, the nice shiney silver on the right and left sides is got really dark on the scan. I do like the design, and the photo is pretty good - Barry is showing off not only his running skills, but flashing his captain status with the crest "C" on his jersey front and center. The card is number 12/25, so there are not a ton of these suckas running around out there. It must have been hard for Joe to give up this card, but he knew it was getting a home where it would be honored and cherished properly.

Herm Winningham

1990 Donruss Herm Winningham
Who: Outfielder Herm Winningham

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1990 Donruss

Acquired: Christmas 1990? 1991?

Comments: Ah, part two of the 1990 (or 1991?) autograph Christmas spectacular. If you remember, the other card acquired that day was an autographed Rob Dibble. It was pretty cool to get both, but I will a little more stoked about the Dibble one, I must say. But, I have to give Herm some respect. He was not too bad... right? He helped. And stuff.

Rob Dibble

1990 Donruss Rob Dibble
Who: Pitcher Rob Dibble

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1990 Donruss

Acquired: Christmas, 1990? 1991?

Comments: Another autograph that I was mega-stoked about. This one was a surprise though. I'm pretty sure I received this card (and another - coming soon!) from my Grandmother on my step-dad's side of the family. I was really surprised. I think it may have been the first autographed card I ever had. Of course at the time (1990?), the Reds were World Champs and Rob Dibble was pretty much a bad-ass, so you can imagine how excited I was. I love that it's personalized too.

This card was one of two that I got as a gift. The other is coming soon, of course.

Ted Power

1988 Donruss Ted Power
Who: Pitcher Ted Power

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1988 Donruss

Acquired: 2007 Redsfest, in person

Comments: Ted Power has been with the Reds organization for quite some time. The past few years he has served as a pitching coach at several different levels in the Reds' farm system. In 2008 he was with the Louisville Bats, the Reds AAA affiliate. Ted is also a regular at Redsfest and a great signer. I have at least another card signed by him along with some ticket stubs and stuff like that. Really nice guy and seems to truly enjoy interacting with the fans.

Now, about the card. Nice photo, but I always hated the Donruss designs in the late '80s. They were a little rough. But, for some reason I have a ton of them. Where packs of Donruss little cheaper than Topps back then? I must have bought them for some reason.
