Mariano Duncan - 1990 Upper Deck
Who: Second Baseman Mariano Duncan

Team: Cincinnati Reds

Card: 1990 Upper Deck

Acquired: TTM 2/2 8/20/2009 (310 days)

Comments: A return from WAY BACK. I've actually sent and received an autograph request from Mr. Duncan since I sent this card and another back in October of '08. I remember the night I sent this - the Dodgers were on TV and in the playoffs. That's how I found out that Mariano was 3rd base coach for the Dodgers. I'm stoked to get this one back. Not only because I thought it was a lost cause, but it's a set that I am slowly working on - all the Reds from the 1990 Upper Deck release. There are a lot of toughies in that one, so no rush, really. It's a great set from my youth - Upper Deck raised the bar for sports cards forever with this one. Plus, the Reds won the World Series that year. Bonus, yo.

Comments: Mariano was a member of the great 1990 Reds team that swept the A's in the World Series. Those were great times. What a sweet signature from Mariano. I think this one will get cataloged under "So Choice, but just barely. How about this card? Topps kicked of the '90s in halftone style with this colorful release. Inspired by comic books, maybe?

So, the photo... I can see the Art Directors at Topps sitting down with their contact sheets looking for "variety". Poor Mariano provided the "variety", while other players were featured in pretty swings, sweet follow-thrus and flattering stances in the outfield. Ol' Mariano has his eyes closed, catching a line drive Little League style. Maybe he'll get some respect in 1991 Topps?
