Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden

Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden
Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden. We took a few other photos, check them out right here, yo.

Also, here's a review of the show from the NY Daily News.

Another quick review with some videos from StereoGum.com. Mostly from night two though. We were at the first show.

Mr. Redlegs

Mr. Redlegs
Mr. Redlegs is all over the place! Here he is stuck on the men's room door at Foley's NY by Madison Square Garden. G and I ate here before the Pearl Jam show. This place was a lucky find. Were just wondering around trying to find anything, really, and we stumbled in here based on the "No Danny Boy" flag they were flying in front. Once we walked in, we realized it was a baseball mecca of sorts - there is memorabilia all over the walls and ceilings of this place. It's pretty kick ass.

Apparently, this place is pretty famous for Banning the Irish Song, "Danny Boy". You can read more here. Now, all the articles that I've seen have seen on this just say that they've banned the song during the month of March. According to our waitress they've gone on to ban it completely. Pretty funny stuff.

Reds fans = Fashionistas

Yes! White jeans!

I'll be posting photos from Yankee Stadium tomorrow over at the OMGreds.com photoblog. The Reds leads the series 2-0 right now... awesome! Let's hope for a sweep, cool?

The Temple of Dendur

It was pretty cool to see the Temple of Dendur. Partly because it had been featured in Project Runway and When Harry Met Sally, partly because it's synonymous with the Met. The Metropolitan Museum of Art blew my mind. It was mind-boggling to believe I was really there. Ever since I was a kid and read The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, I wanted to go there.

It's hard to explain, but I felt rather patriotic that this world-class museum is in the U.S. Dan and I were lucky enough to visit museums of this rank in London and Paris, but I questioned whether my own country had a comparable collection anywhere. I've been to the Getty in L.A., the Art Institute of Chicago and countless other museums around the country, but the Met is undoubtedly the preeminent museum in the U.S

The only problem is, when I visit a mega-museum like this, it always seems like there's just not enough time. We saw a LOT of stuff yesterday, and still barely scratched the surface. Plus, it gets exhausting to see just the galleries/artworks you want to see, let alone the unexpected treasures you kind of stumble upon.

Yesterday, we visited

  • the Superheroes special exhibit (fashion from and inspired by superhero movies) - no photos allowed, unfortunately
  • Modern Art galleries (where they had a great selection of Giacometti & Modigliani)
  • 19th-century European painting galleries (van Gogh, Seurat, Matisse, Redon, Picasso)
  • Medieval art & armor
  • Egyptian art and the Temple of Dendur
We also made a point to check out the Koons exhibit on the roof. It doesn't sound like much, but it wiped us out for the day. As usual, I geeked out and took a bunch of photos of paintings & sculpture. Dan joined in, with detailed shots of various paintings - including Chuck Close. Some of our photos are posted on Flickr for those wishing to vicariously browse the Met galleries.

Lunch at the Met cafeteria

Cafeteria-style dining doesn't exactly scream upscale NYC, but the Met's cafeteria was pretty impressive. Plus, as usual, we were starving. Everything was fresh, so that's a bonus. I created the above from a salad bar and was restored for more museum-wandering.

On the roof of The Met. Way cool. There is an awesome view of the city up here. They have a little booth up there with food and drinks... adult drinks. Nothing like a little sangria to get you loosened up for some museum-going.

Times Square, Friday night

After the MJ show, we walked around for a little bit, taking in Times Square and the surrounding area. It's all hustle & bustle all day long. Amazing. It was starting to rain a little bit, and we've been up over 20 hours today... so we are pooped. More tomorrow.

That just happened!

As Jim James prowled the side stages of RCMH, a drunk fan climbed up to greet him and was skillfully whisked away by security. I got a photo...will post. It is PRICELESS. Security disappeared with him behind a curtain in a matter of seconds; it was like something out of Goodfellas.
At right - Jim James running back down to the stage. At left, security ushering a fan behind "the magic curtain."

FAIL

Meh... not a great photo here. Oh well. The rotunda of Radio City was lighting up in a fun way and I tried to capture it. FAIL.

Jim!

Jim James - My Morning Jacket
Not that you can really tell, but the spotlight is on Jim James as he runs up the side of the balcony at Radio City. If you are on the stage, you are able to run to set of stairs and platforms to the first mezzanine. James took the trip a couple of times on both side. Pretty fun.

Our photos from the show are right here.

Was ist Neue?

The Neue Galerie was our first stop today to see the Klimt exhibit. It didn't take us long to get through the exhibit of about 7 paintings and many drawings / personal effects. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more paintings (and that the Neue didn't permit photos in the galleries), but the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (postcard shown in picture) was worth the price of admission. Unbelievable. The Neue paid $135 million for this painting, which may still hold the record. Plus, the subject and provenance of the painting are pretty fascinating.

Anyway, we're back at the hotel now...gearing up for the My Morning Jacket concert tonight. Auf Wiedersehen.

I remember seeing a TV advertisement featuring this new hand dryer a few times, but I was never sure if they were actually in production or not. Looks cool. Don't ask me how it works... I still grabbed some paper towels. Sorry environment.

For Jhill

We didn't head into the Met today, but we'll be back before we head home.

The wrap that saved the day

For the love of all that is holy, you have got to eat! Especially when you're traveling. Strangely enough, our eating routine gets all mixed up when we're away from home, resulting in grouchiness, the shakes, short tempers and general indecisiveness. This fresh mozzarella and sun-dried tomato wrap saved the day for me. Dan's pesto chicken panini should be credited, as well. Thank you, panini and wrap, for restoring our pluck.
