Well, if live anywhere near Cincinnati, you've heard this story today:
Coach controversy on YouTube: Boy's helmet yanked; parents want apology
The coach in question was one of my wrestling coaches in high school and my biology teacher. I've watched the video a dozen times and just can't believe the deal being made out of this, calling it child abuse. Check out the comments on this at Cincinnati.Com.
For the record, here are the comments I sent in:
It's likely that not all the facts about this incident are on the table At this time and it's a little early to be lynching Coach Boreing. What I Do know is this: Coach Boreing was my Biology teacher and wrestling coach In high school and I have a very hard time believing the he would Intentionally harm and player or student or anyone for that matter. He's an upstanding person, a quality teacher and a superb coach. While I don't condone Physical abuse in football or elsewhere, from watching the clip, I have a hard Time believing that he even grabbed him by the face mask. I'm not 100% sure, But it looks like he grabbed his jersey. Plus, the kid looks like he flails At the coach, maybe taking a swing (a weak one) at the coach. Anxiety attack? Well, it seems the kid was already fired up since he slapped another Player before the incident with the coach. Sounds like the kid had a rough day - not an abusive one. I think this incident should have been discussed privately (and it looks like it was), but this should have never been Put out for the public. I think only unfortunate things will come from this - for everyone - Coach Boreing, the kid and his parents. I also think it irresponsible journalism to write a story that include lines like: "violently yanking their son by his helmet" I just don't think the known
facts can back this up.
Obviously, since I know coach Boreing, I will tend to be biased. I can't help it. The kid's parents are biased as well, that's the way it works. But, I just can't believe what people are saying about this incident - calling for legal action, remove him from teaching or "street justice". Get over yourselves!! Street justice? Are you kidding me?
I could seriously go on and on about this - I'm really upset about it. Like I said in my comment to Cincinnati.Com, only bad things will come out of this - for everyone. It's so sad.
A couple of things for the record:
1) Coach Boring was my wrestling coach during my sophomore year in high school.
2) He was my biology teacher the same year.
3) I played football in junior high, high school and college.
4) I even work a Cincinnati.Com/The Enquirer.
I state those things to show completely where I am coming from.
UPDATE!
Coach denies abusing boy Check out the letter from the Mason Football Association regarding the parents' actions. Very interesting.
Letter from DeMann family to president of Mason Youth Football Also intersting.
