Pickin' in the basement

On Friday night, I just happen to run into my Grandmother (Gran) while I was walking home from work. She was catching the bus back home from spending the day at the zoo. Her transfer was downtown, and on the street I walk home on. So, of course, I offer her a ride home. It's been a while since I have seen her so it was great to catch up on things.

G and I take her back home to Ludlow and stop in to say hi to my grandfather (Papaw) who was having a jam session with fellas that he's been playing with most of his life. We sat in on their session and really enjoyed it. The photo above was from the session, taken in the basement. The same basement that not only my brother and I played in as kids, but also my mom. They have owned this house for nearly 50 years.

Back to the music... Now, I have always known that Papaw was a pretty impressive musician, playing country-western and blues influenced music. He's got a great touch on the guitar and a pretty sweet voice. Though I've been around him all my life, I bet I can only recall 5-6 times I have sat their and watched him play. Knowing this, G and I sat and watched last night with great intent and really took it in. Though the guys were just having fun and not too worried about being tight, they were awesome to listen to. You could tell these guys have been playing together for years. Also, this photo only shows Papaw on the left with his friend, on the acoustic guitar. There are also four other musicians there, three guitar players and a fella on bass.

At one point, one of the guys (I am blanking on everyone's names!) offer his guitar to me to sit in. I can't play a lick of guitar, so I had to decline, and I have to say, I kinda hurt me inside. I really wished I could have joined in. I know Papaw would have really dug that. So... playing the guitar is being put on the life list :)

So, my point is... it was awesome. I got to see my grandfather in his element and really appreciate it. I know he appreciated us being down there and being fans. We truly were fans too. All because I just happened for run into Gran. I know it happened for a reason.

great story, great experience. especially, how much you enjoy music, to have this literally in the family that's pretty cool.

funny, things that are there your whole life it takes you being older or wiser to appreciate them in a totally different light.

Thanks for commenting, Keith. At one point while taking it all in, I though "you know who would enjoy the hell out of this? Keith." No kidding, I knew you would love it.

You are right... as time goes by you change the way you look at things. I'm lucky also to have a bunch of great family and friends that always give me new perspective.
