Pearl Jam at The Spectrum

Eddie Vedder playing to the crowd at The Spectrum
G and I made it to our annual Pearl Jam concert for 2009. This year, we caught Pearl Jam in Philly on Halloween night. Not only was it Halloween, it was also the last show of any kind at the fabled Spectrum Arena. Plus, across the street, the Phillies were hosting the Yankees for game 3 of the World Series. It was crazy to say the least. Lots of tailgating, lots of folks in Phillies gear and a ton of fans dressed for Halloween.

While we have pretty good seniority in Pearl Jam's 10 Ten Club, we actually won "the lottery" that they have for every show and our seats were upgraded to row 10. Not bad at all.

PJ always brings their best game every night, and this show was no exception. Since they were doing a four night stand at the Spectrum that week, they set out to play nearly everything in their catalog. For a long-time fan, that was a lot of fun because the pulled out a lot of rarities and stuff they've never played live before. While it was somewhat of a chaotic show from that stand-point, it was also a lot of fun since what was coming next was likely out of left-field.

Song-wise, the biggest treat was PJ coming out of a set-break dressed up as Devo, promptly launching into "Whip It". It just made for classic stuff. Check out this fantastic video clip.

So, the PJ show was awesome. Seeing the last show in The Spectrum was pretty special. I've never been there, so it was a little bittersweet. You try to take in the essence of the place on what's really it's last breath. It's a surreal feeling, in a way.

One of the things that The Spectrum is supposedly know for was fantastic sound. Most arenas are not known for great sound. There is just something about they way that old arena was built that lent itself to great acoustics. I couldn't agree more. It sounded great from our seats.

Eddie Vedder pick from The SpectrumAnother thing our seats brought us - We found an Eddie Vedder pick when we sat down before the show. It was lying there in the row in front of us. Of all the shows I've been to, and all the great seats I've had, I've never scored a pick. Those guys throw out a lot of picks during shows, so you always have to be on the lookout. I guess Ed tossed this one out during soundcheck so that a fan like myself would find a little souvenir from the show.

Rob's view

From 525 row A seat 4.

Rob and got to another game this week. That makes 3 in-a-row for Rob and 4 straight for me. I don't think I've made it to more than two game in a row before. Fun.

This will be it on the baseball photos for now. G and I are headed to London tomorrow night, and Paris later next week. We'll not only be taking in the sights in Europe, but also going to the Pearl Jam show in London at Wembley Arena. We're pumped, for sure.

From what I understand, my mobile phone will work overseas and I should be able to send text and picture messages. So, I'll set up a Europe blog to post to and also post to my PJ photo blog during the show. Hopefully things will work well. It will cost a pretty penny per message, so I won't be pounding the messages like I usually do. Probably just a smattering of the scene.

Hi, 2007

Mr. Egg
Well, here's another blog post about the end of 2006 or beginning of 2007 to add to the blog world. Cool.

It was a good holiday around our house. We all got lots of treats for Christmas and had a few days off to chill out, see our family and friends and get some things done around the condo.

Most notable of the items accomplished around the house is my "Wall of Rock." It's quite done yet, as I have a few more posters to frame, but it's started and that's a big deal. I think I looks great. Here's a photo:

Wall of Rock

All the posters are hand silk screened works of art that I have collected over the past few years. I have plenty more that will never find their way behind glass, but this is a start.

Here is the layout of the prints on the floor. I went through about a dozen different arrangements. Also in this are the prints that will be framed next - to see how it will all layout.

Floor layout

Here where I laid out the prints on the wall using newspaper cut to the size of the print. This was just to make sure the arrangement looked good on the wall and the spacing was good. Since I am going to floor to ceiling with this, I have some outlets to contend with. This helped me know where those would be in the overall layout.

Newsprint layout

On the wall now are these prints:

2003 Pearl Jam Brisbane - Ames Bros
2003 Pearl Jam Cincinnati - Ames Bros
2004 Pearl Jam Seattle (Showbox) - Brad Klausen
2004 Pearl Jam Toledo - Brad Klausen
2005 Cake - Newport, Ky - Small Print Stuidos
2006 Fiery Furnaces - Denver - Michael Michael Motorcycle
2006 Pearl Jam - Cincinnati - Brad Klausen

That's all for now. All I can say is there are some pretty cool things coming up in 2007. Can't wait.
