I'm not sure what it is, but maybe I'm lucky or something. The past few years I've been witness to several car fires. Not just little things, but cars that are fully engulfed in flames. There's something about seeing fireball on the side of the highway. The photo above was taken this morning right after I dropped of G for work on 75/71 north in Kentucky. I can't believe I got such a great shot of it while driving by. Yes, I was gawking... but I tried to keep it to a minimum.
Here's another car fire that G and I drove by while leaving Chicago a few years ago:
There have been a few others. While CiN Weekly was in their offices on Reading Road, there was a car in the parking lot going up in flames. Pretty exciting. Sorry, no photo for that one... didn't have my camera on me that day!
In high school, I had a Fiero (yes, awesome, I know) and while driving on I-275 one night, I drove by another Fiero that had just been on fire. Since the body was made of fiberglass, the entire back end of the car (it was a mid-engine design) had pretty much melted off. I felt awful for the poor little Fiero. It also scared the hell out of me. Sorry, no photo of that one either. I have photos of my Fiero in boxes somewhere... I may have to dig one of those out soon.
Aside fires, I do run into other car mishaps and photograph them. Here is an AMAZING wreck that happened in the parking garage across from CiN Weekly back in 2004. Here's another nice little accident down the street from our previous apartment. Enjoy!
