Throw it Back

Brayden and Uncle Dan
This past Sunday, G and I took our nephew, Brayden, to a baseball game. The Reds were playing the Rockies to wrap up a three-game-series, and looking to avoid a sweep. It was a perfect day for a game weather-wise and Brayden was excited to be heading to his third game of the season.

While he's been to three games this year, this will be just the second game which just his aunt and uncle have taken him. It's also Jay Bruce Mesh Jersey day and were excited to get him the giveaway. More excited that he probably was to actually get it. I must say, he's a purist and is there just for the game.

Brayden and his Jay Bruce JerseyEven with me leaving the tickets at home and running back to get them, we still get to the ballpark early, making sure we were able to get little Mr. B his Jay Bruce jersey. We also meet up with our friend Dave and his son, Jacob before the game. After getting through the gates and get the little ones their jerseys, we have an impromptu jersey try-on inside the ballpark. Brayden is only 3 and a half years old, so the jersey was hanging on him like a bathrobe. He wasn't too interested in it, so we snapped a few photos of him posing in it and put it back in the bag. He has a few years to go into it.

Next stop for all of us was the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. Former Red great, Lee May, was scheduled to sign autographs and chat with fans that afternoon before the game. We came prepared with a card to get signed for Brayden and headed in. It wasn't too crowded around Mr. May when we got to his table, so we immediately walked up, said hi, and shook his hand. He signed a baseball card for Brayden and another for me, all while chatting up Brayden and giving his some high fives. Mr. May was also gracious enough to pose with us for a photo. I've given a few autographed cards to Brayden over the past year or so, but I think this was the first time he received an autograph in person.

After some snacks, we took Brayden to the stands on the first base side of GABP to catch the last bit of batting practice. While we were walking down the aisle, a Rockies batter was pulling foul balls into the stands pretty close to us. I found an empty area in the stands near where the balls were landing, and what do you know, the next swing puts a foul ball a few rows up from us. At first, I didn't think we would have shot at getting it, but I got in position for a rebound and it worked out. The ball bounced off the hands of a guy two rows above us, rolled down his leg and kicked out under the seats in front of him for me to grab - all while having a tight hold on Brayden. I could hear the footsteps of people run down the row above me from both sides, but I kept my eye on the ball and picked it while leaning over the seats in my row. Not exactly an epic catch or anything, but I had to be quick and in just the right spot to get the ball. As soon as I picked it up, groans where heard all around from the folks I beat to the ball.

Brayden and his baseballOnce secured, I handed the ball to Brayden, thinking he might be pretty excited about it. Well, to my surprise, he immediately wanted the throw the ball back to the players saying, "Noooo! We have to give it back to the players!".

It took a minute, but I finally convinced him that the players want us to keep balls that are hit in the stands, that it's all part of going to the ballpark. How cute, right? It's hard to argue with the little guy when he is trying to be so polite.

As it turns out, that was the very last ball it into the stands during batting practice and the grounds crew was soon hard at work preparing the field for the game. G, Brayden and I were only in the stands for batting practice for all of maybe 5 minutes, and we came away with a great little souvenir.

All this action, and the game hadn't even started yet. Needless to say, we had a great day with our little nephew.

Reds Bobbleheads '08

Frank Robinson Bobblehead
Alright, let's lay down the Reds bobblehead predictions for 2008. Well, I have to say that I only have one to predict as of right now - I have sources that have supplied me the first two of the year - Brandon Phillips and Tom Browning.

Now, Phillips was going to be a pick for sure He had an all-star caliber '07 and joined the 30-30 club. Browning was also going to be on my list - maybe not a shoe-in, but at least as a reasonable possibility. Both Phillips and Browning showed up on my picks from last year.

Now it gets hard.

I'm not sure I have a definite for a third slot. The Reds do have a third bobblehead, my source indicated it's listed as TBD right now. I thought that Josh Hamilton had an outside shot this year until he was traded to the Rangers. Though he's young, Cincinnati really embraced him and he's pretty damn good.

Homer Bailey?
I hesitate to throw out Homer Bailey's name. He's not a lock to be in the rotation this season at this point (though I think he will make it) so I don't think the Reds want to pull the trigger on him just yet.

Ryan Freel
A few names I have thrown out in the past may have a chance. At the top of that list is Ryan Freel. They could capitalize on the dirty jersey all Reds fans know and love. He's been a Red for quite a while and is popular with the fans.

Scott Hatteberg
I listed Scott Hatteberg last year, but I actually feel this has less chance of happening this season.

Edwin Encarnacion
Nope, not yet.

David Ross
I guess he is my wild card. The Reds have pretty much said that the catcher position is up for grabs in spring training, so he may not be a great choice for a bobble either. I do think a Javier Valentin bobblehead would be pretty badass, but Ross has a better shot than Javy does.

Jose Rijo
I'm surprised I didn't bring him up earlier. Rijo has a great chance if not this season, next. He's a fan favorite, in the Reds HOF and part of the '90 World Series team with a few other that have received bobbles: Eric Davis, Chris Sabo and Tom Browning.

Wish List
The Reds couldn't go wrong with dipping into the past - even twice in one season. I'll stick with my trio from last year - Ted Kluszewski, Johnny Vander Meer and George Foster. Any of those guys would be strong - at least Big Klu and Foster. A few others to throw out: Ken Griffey Sr., Mario Soto, Sparky Anderson. All long shots, though.

The Reds are running out of great historical player to portray in bobblehead form. Not that the Reds haven't had great players in the past, but many of the most charismatic, most popular players have received one already. I believe this is the 8th season they have had bobbleheads. It's a trend that will start to die soon - if it's not dying already.

Here comes the Reds iPod Nano giveaway!!!

btw, if anyone out there has a Pete Harnish bobble from 2001 - I am looking for one. It's one of two that I don't have. The other being the Johnny Bench one - that giveaway was a mess!

Here's a list of Reds bobblheads broken down by year:

2001
Barry Larkin
Danny Graves
Pete Harnish

2002
Eric Davis
Chris Sabo
Adam Dunn
Johnny Bench

2003

Tony Perez
Wily Mo Peña

2006
Dave Concepcion

A busy weekend

Did lots of stuff this weekend! Quick line-item recap:

Friday Night: Redsfest
Saturday: Redsfest
Saturday Night: hQ Holiday Party
Sunday: Bengals game (win!)

Redsfest was once again stellar this year. Last year brought a whole new look/feel/excitement to it and this year exceeded last year's, for sure. Lots of the big-name reds players were in attendance this year including Junior, Dunn, Harang and Arroyo. Of course, the Reds' new skipper, Dusty Baker was there and signed tons of autographs and was very engaging with the fans - great to see. Unfortunately, Josh Hamilton could not be there... but Homer Bailey was. It seemed like the whole darn team was there. Very cool.

So, I got a bunch of autographs this year - even more than last. Here's the list:

Current Reds:
Bill Bray
Matt Belisle
Todd Coffey x2
Chris Dickerson
Bobby Livingston
David Ross
Brad Salmon x2
Javier Valentin

Minor Leaguers:
Jay Bruce (Louisville) - Minor League Player of the Year
Richie Gardner (Louisville)
Todd Frazier (Dayton)
Drew Stubbs (Dayton) x2
Justin Turner (Dayton)
Chris Valaika (Dayton)

Former Reds:
Lee May
Ron Oester
Ted Power x2

I'm excited to get anyone's autograph really, but highlights include:

Jay Bruce - should be a STUD for the Reds very soon
Todd Coffey - real chatty, seemed pretty nice
David Ross - also very chatty, seemed genuinely nice
Ron Oester - the guy is a badass, but super nice

Guys I wish I could have gotten: Dusty Baker, Junior (of course), Eric Davis, Ceasar Geronimo, Ryan Freel and Joey Votto. Of course, Dunn, Arroyo and Harang would have been cool too. Maybe next year.

Sometime in January I'll have my Reds bobblehead predictions for the year. Stay tuned, yo.

Bugh! Bugh!

Reds fan

This dude was a trip. There are so many things to cover with this one... I will just have to do it in list form.

- No shirt
- Pirate hat
- Pirate hook thing for hand... with no hook
- Yelled "Bugh" a lot
- Struck the Captain Morgan pose quite a few times
- Gave Rob a high-five

and...

- The only person at a baseball game I have ever seen catch a foul ball and throw it back on the field. WHAT? Who does that? Apparently, this guy does.

BUGH! BUGH!

Again with Mr. Redlegs. I think he's following me around.

Mr. Redlegs

Mr. Redlegs paid our section a visit last night while the Reds came back twice to beat the Braves and even their series at a game a piece. I got the pleasure of going to the game with DC. He's got his hands full at home with the kids, so it was a treat that he was able to attend.

Tonight! A bobblehead night for the Reds. I'll be heading down, but probably for just an inning or too. G and I have to get the condo ready for some guests tomorrow night. I mention that because there will be more to that story later. Until then...

Big Frank

Big Frank Robinson oversees the action at Great American Ballpark.

Tonight was a special night. Dick, my father-in-law, is a HUGE Frank Robinson fan, so the whole family went to the ballgame tonight as a belated birthday treat to him. He loved it. It was also Brayden's very first baseball game. He's our little 1.5 year old nephew. He won't remember anything from the ballgame when he grows up, but I'll be sure to show him photos of the bobblehead he threw on the floor and broke at the game! No worries... it was pretty cute and I have video of it. Coming soon, of course.

Up in da club

Homer Bailey pitching the Albert Pojuls
I'm pretty sure I've used that title on a post before, but it was again applicable today as well - G and I had tickets to the famed "Diamond Club" at Great American Ball Park. We had the pleasure of watching the game from the 3rd row, right behind the plate. It's a nice view. The food and service is nothing like you get at any other seat in the ballpark. It's something you could really get used to. Sitting anywhere else at the next ballgame I go to will be slightly painful.

Click here for photos. Check out video of Jr.'s 585 home run right here.

Opening Day photos

Opening Day was fantastic this year. Great weather, great game, great times. I ended up scoring some great seats thanks to my friend Gina (She has more photos too!), much to the chagrin of Tall Paul who actually got to buy Opening Day tickets from the Reds by winning the ticket lottery they did. Rob was in tow and in great form. It was ultra-enjoyable.

2007 Reds bobblehead predictions

Filipe Lopez, Davey Concepcion and Barry Larkin
With the impending release of the Reds 2007 promotional dates (it's coming soon, I imagine) I'd like to take some time and put in my predictions for this year's bobbleheads. Last year, I was pretty close, but you wouldn't know because they were up on a white board in my boss' office and not on my blog. Well, here they are for everyone to see...

Who will be forever immortalized in Cincinnati Reds promotional glory with their very own bobblehead in 2007?

1. Bronson Arroyo
He's a given. He was the Reds' lone All-Start in 2006 and had the best season by a Reds pitcher in years - especially the first half of the season. Plus, how marketable is that mane of his?

2. Ryan Freel
He's been a fan favorite for a few years now for his gettin' dirty style of play. What Cincinnati Reds, Pete Rose lovin' Cincinnatian doesn't love that?

3. Tom Browning
I thought that he would have gotten one last year (Freel was on my maybe list then too), but the shortstop trio got the nods instead. Browning was inducted into the Reds Hall Of Fame and had his book released last year. He's been all over the place in Cincinnati the past two years. If they go with a pitcher trio - Browning would get the nod. Plus... the Perfect Game... does that even need to be said?

Okay, so here is my short list of other possible Reds...

4. Brandon Phillips
Phillips is perhaps the best of the Reds young stars. He had a good rookie season last year and has been promoted pretty heavily by the Reds since the middle of last season. It wouldn't surprise me if he got some promo action of some kinda this season.

5. Aaron Harang
He's been a solid picther for the Reds the past 3 seasons. If it's all pitchers, he may get the nod.

6. Scott Hatterburg
He's an outside shot at best, but if the Reds are looking to market some newer players, he's one to latch on to. Solid, steady, hard worker, gets dirty (see Freel).

So, those are mostly current guys. Who from the past would like like to see in ceramic form?

Ted Kluszewski1. Ted Kluszewski
Who wouldn't want a bobblehead with the Big Klu's guns bustin' out of his famous sleeveless uniform?

Johnny VanDermeer2. Johnny VanDermeer
Only pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters in MLB history. Can you get any better? Plus, it would be nice to have a guy in an old uni up on the shelf.

George Foster3. George Foster
Big Red Machine, baby! Gotta love George and his bitchin' sideburns. Hell, make his bobblehead with him in street clothes. I understand he was a pretty audacious dresser back in the day.
